Painting Skin Tones/Finished Raven, Quail and Moose
Hello students,
Today’s lesson will be particularly interesting to those of you that like to paint people. Creating good skin tones requires some tricks.
Once again we are dealing with art as an illusion of reality. There is really no fairy here. It is just paper and paint. But in the end we will fool the viewer into thinking that they are seeing into another world. In order to create shapes that have depth, I would like to introduce you to the use of opposite colors.

Orange and blue are opposites and create tension within the wash.I start by creating enough paint on my glass palette to last for the entire body of the fairy.
I first place clear water in the chosen open spaces and then put orange brown on the top, and blue in the area where the shadow would be. Each wash, when properly placed, creates the illusion of skin.
When your washes are interesting shapes unto themselves, it’s a bit like having good ingredients in a recipe. The more each shape stands alone as an art form, the more the entire painting will be perceived as beautiful by the viewer in the end. Working on people/fairies is the most difficult and time consuming of my painting.

Heart To Heart

How about Sacred Family for the Quail painting…or, Sacred Space.
Both Paintings are beautiful Jody

I have one more idea for the Ravens…Waiting…

My suggestion for a name for the Raven painting is: “Humbly Sent Messengers, or just Humbly Sent” Or “Craving Praise or just Cravings”
Ravens have long been important to me. I learned that Noah first sent a raven to look for land then God sent Ravens to feed Elijah in the desert. Every time I see a crow (the closest thing we have here to Ravens) it reminds me to pray then I will usually see a mourning dove which signals Gods love and I can stop praying. I think of Ravens as providing food from God, supplying our needs, and who doesn’t need prayer. It is sad that some creatures or things get a bad connotation..
The Quail Painting could be “Don’t lose Heart”

Hey,
For the ravens I was thinking of “Hearing the Call”. They all look like they are about to leave to go somewhere. Also was thinking of “Watching the Skies” or “Observing the world” since Ravens are often watchers in myths.
For the Quail I was thinking “Family Haven” or I wasn’t sure if you could use parts of quotes but a quote by Helen Keller said “Refuge Under the Family tree” which i thought would work well for your picture.

When i looked at the Quails I thought “Quail Family walkabout”
I also like the song “blackbird” by the beattles. Lyrics?

How about “Quailty of Life” for the quail painting? It’s so beautiful and peaceful, showing the parents protecting the chicks. Isn’t that what life is all about anyway — togetherness and love?
They are all so stunning! Keep up the beautiful work, and your blog is AWESOME! I’ve worndered many times about your processes, and I can’t tell you how helpful this has been for me.

A nice title for the quail woluld be “A Lovey Covey” and for the Ravens, “Ever Watchful”

As always Jody, your paintings are superb. Ravens: Ravens at Watch, Watchful Sentinals; Quails: Festive Family Plumes

For the raven picture I keep getting “Rustling Feathers”. They are both so beautiful. I cannot come up with a name for the Quail piece. I am enjoying your blog! I have not worked with watercolors, mainly hard pastels. I tend to blend the dark and light colors together and I appreciate your tip on placing light colors on first. I feel that is where I am going wrong. Thank you! *happy dance*

The first thing that came to mind about the raven painting is Forest Spirits or Spirits of the Forest. And then I thought Guardians might work too.
As for the quails, I like your title. Just the word Family sums it up nicely for me.

I like “Messengers of the Great Mystery” That is the truth of the Native world with the raven.
You once signed a card for me on my 50th birthday of frogs….My son got it from you. God bless you for the work that you do. It is a true gift to all of us who chose to follow a sacred, spiritual path.

Dear Jody,
It was so incredible to meet you at Faerieworlds! My daughter Rhiannon (3years) remembers you and says “Jody” when she sees your picture. Anyway I love your new paintings and I thought of “Quaint Covey” and “Raven’s Rest” when I saw them.
